Child's Play 2005
Posted By Chris Crosby at 12:53 AM
I doubt you need us to tell you about it, but Child's Play is back again. Here's your chance to do some good and maybe even anger Jack Thompson in the process! It's a win-win situation. * 7 comments

Do some good?! Buying video games for kids in shiny white hospitals in the first world so they don't get bored while the ankle they broke throwing a tantrum in the depatment store sets. This morning I listened to a lecture about a charity that provided for facial reconstruction for children with cleft skulls, tumours and vein disorders that led to fatal facial disfigurements- sometimes because they would be stoned by their superstitious villages. Some of the people who needed this charity walked thrgh mountins to catch plains to England where they could have the surgery. So give your money to Facing the World, for example, or CAFOD, or Cancer Research. Prevent death, not yawning. Do some good? To spend money here would be to not spend it alleviating real suffering- and most ethical philosophers, from Kant to Mill, would call such an action amoral if not evil.

Hey, asshat!!
You know why they have beauty parlors in hospitals? To RAISE MORALE, hater!
It works on the same princible as placebo. If you feel healthy, chances are you are healthy.

Maybe you should go do some good in the world, instead of asking other people to do it for you while critisizing the way THEY help people.
(If you DO do good in the world, disregard that last paragraph.)

...yeah, that's all I got.

First guy makes a point in a round-about way; they're other charities you can donate to if you feel that your money would serve better elsewhere. Take the IWK in Halifax Nova Scotia, for example. They specialize in caring for children and young adults. They actually gave my girlfriend her chemothreapy when she was thirteen, saving her life since the tumor in her throat would have choked her to death before the cancer got her. Now I don't know about other cases, but she was all but bound to that hospital for a year. If I had been in her position, I would have liked something to take my mind off of a treatement that was going to save my life, but severely cripple my immune system. The kids recovering from God knows what need to be distracted from what they're going through, and toys and videogames are another part of their recovery in that respect.

My final point? If you don't want to buy the kids toys, then you could donate directly to the hospitals like the IWK if you're too much of a cynical, self-serving asshole to give terminally ill children even a small ounce of joy. Being in a hospital, injured or terminally ill, is a pretty miserable experience. Either donate to help with their treatement or donate to help ease their malaise during recovery, neither cause is a waste of money.

'the ankle they broke throwing a tantrum in the department store'? Sounds like the kid has some sort of degenerative bone disease or they just need more milk and a little less sugar in their diet. That or the kid is just an asshole... Hey, maybe anon3:40 PM is speaking from past experience! Seriously, either give your money to a good cause or two, or choose to remain silent, anon3:40 PM.

Why don't 'I' shut-up and donate? Well, it just so happens that I'll be in the neighbourhood of the IWK this X-mas. I'll buy some of the stuff locally (in NS), and swing by with it and whatever cash I can scrape together. I owe that place big-time, really.

Always assume nothing.
Always question everything.
Always believe in something,
just not silly anon3:40 PM.

CONFUSING WHAT IS REAL!

Seriously, you angst-ridden, antisocial little punk, either you're cutting yourself too much or not enough. Now why don't you get off of your daddy's computer and sit in the dark brooding because he doesn't understand you? That or go put on some Linkin Park to listen to while mutulating your forearms with a kitchen knife, putting yourself out of our misery and hopefully out of the gene pool.

Philosophy? If YOU were truly ethical, you would have kept your opinion to yourself and said this instead:

'I'm going to donate directly to the hospitals. Maybe some of you could spare some cash along with the games and movies? Here are some worthy causes that I am donating my time and money to...'

Don't demean good people by claiming to be one yourself then quoting them AFTER you've said something like that. You want REAL evil? You cynicism and ignorance of your own flaws are good examples. I myself will probably go to Hell for buying a coffee with my spare change instead of dropping it into the cancer jar, but at least I realise and admit it.

Sorry, I think I might of gone a little far.

But yeah, you just worded it like an asshole, I'm sure you had righteous reasons for your rant.

But yeah, last week me and my friends checked a concert where all the procedes went to the Katrina victims in our town (We all raised 800$!). That was cool, though I shoulda' brought more mney, and I shouldn't of bought myself that cake.
